Bee Bread

Bee Bread

Bee bread is also known as Perga, Ambrosia, Food of the Gods, or even the Formula of Life – Food of the Gods was a title given to Bee Bread by the ancient Greeks.

Bee Bread is made of bee pollen collected by honey bee workers. Before the bee worker goes to collect pollen, she supplies herself with a little honey from the hive, but this is far away from being their lunch 🙂 As bee sisters fly from bloom to bloom, they comb the pollen very quickly and slightly moisturize it with a saliva-honey mixture and then they move it into baskets on their hind legs called corbiculae.  Back at the hive, bees deposit their pollen pellets close to the cells where bee larvae are growing.

Then other bees – very young bee workers – come along to add honey and some of their saliva to the pollen to make each pellet of bee bread protein-rich then the mixture is compacted in the hexagonal cells of the honeycomb and undergoes a very important process – lactic fermentation under anaerobic conditions, which makes it completely resistant to mould and rot. Fermentation of bee bread takes around 7 days and once it is over it is ready to eat!

Once again it proves how smart Bees are!

Bee Bred is an excellent food source, especially for bees aged 3 to 4 weeks, which stay in the hive busy feeding the larvae and creating royal jelly during the season. It is also the main food source of Queen Bee – which helps her to live for up to 6 years – a very long life – in opposition to a life of a bee worker which is around 6 weeks. The Worker bees which stay in the hive over the winter need to consume the bee bread in order to lengthen their life to around 200 days in total.

While Beekeepers harvest the honeycomb from the hives, in some frames bee bread will be present however it is very important to leave most of it in the hive as bee bread is the main source of food for bees and it is a crucial ingredient for them to survive and to expand the colony. As it is harder to obtain bee bread than be pollen its cost is much higher.

During the entire summer period, the bee flies hundreds of plants, thanks to it they collect over 250 of the most valuable biologically active ingredients, which then accumulate in the bee bread. As you probably know, most plants have a medicinal value, therefore the bee bread is perceived by many as the Formula of Life – containing the best ingredients that nature can share. Bee Bread is the natural essence of life.

It contains all vitamins, a number of amino acids, proteins, nucleic acids, enzymes, lipids and fatty acids, phenolic, and triterpene compounds, sugars, and bio elements. By eating Perga daily we can achieve a real state of homeostasis in our bodies which stimulates or inhibits the work of individual organs and therefore allows biological harmony.  Properties of bee bread allow the human body to activate natural defence mechanisms likely increasing the chances of maintaining good health.

Nowadays, many laboratory tests confirm the value of Bee Bread as an excellent supplement with nutritional, antibacterial, and detoxifying properties. The Bee Bread is also known to have detoxifying effect on our liver. In addition, it strengthens and regenerates the body, and also improves the functioning of the digestive system. It seals blood vessels and reduces the risk of hypertension.

Regular use might help to strengthen immunity, and improve eyesight and memory as the ability to concentrate. It is used in the treatment of intestinal inflammations, anemia, hypertensive disease, diabetes, lack of appetite, exhaustion, fatigue, and diseases of the nervous system. It is known to help  in the fight against prostatic hyperplasia and during convalescence after diseases, operations, and antibiotic treatments as helps with insomnia, and stress problems in a more natural way.

So what’s the difference between Bee Bread and Bee Pollen?

The difference between Bee Bread and Bee pollen is the content of individual macro-and micronutrients which are different.

In the case of flower pollen, the protein content is on average 23% (including the amino acids: arginine, phenylalanine, leucine, lysine, alanine, histidine, glycine) , carbohydrates approx. 31% (including 25.7% simple sugars, glucose, and fructose) [5] and 5% fat (mainly including EFAs)  It is a rich source of vitamins A, E, C, D, and also from group B. Pollen also contains a lot of minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, manganese, zinc, iron and copper. Moreover, pollen is a source of polyphenols and flavonoids (including chlorogenic acid, quercetin, and kaempferol).

When it comes to bee bread and its properties, they surpass the healing effect of pollen due to its richer composition and easier digestibility due to being fermented. In the bee bread, the level of simple sugars, amino acids, unsaturated fatty acids, lactic acid, and vitamins increases as a result of bee enzymes and fermentation.

How to eat Bee Bread?

In order to maximize the absorption and digestion of bee bread, the best practice is to dissolve a spoon of bee bread in lukewarm water and leave it on for a night. Mix it well together, drink it straight in the morning on an empty stomach.

You can also mix it with herbal infusions and water with honey, just remember it cannot be mixed with water above 40 ° C.

Despite the relatively high price, it is worth taking advantage of these natural multivitamins at least once in a while, especially in the autumn and winter period, because they are not only great substitutes for artificial drugs and supplements, but also have a very positive effect on our health and mood.
